What’s in a Name?

kimmcmartin

Hi Folks,
We have a quick one this week. Rather quiet around HQ, finally. XC60s are moving out to retailers and customers. There is almost an air of relief here that this project has finally come from wishful thinking to seeing them roll of curbs into peoples lives. Our past chief of design, Peter Horbury, liked to talk about why we name our cars. Nina R. good friend and long time Volvo owner has named all her cars after Swedes: S40 – Sven, S40 – Per, and now her C30 is Lars. So what’s with naming? According to British lore (Peter), when we had horses, they were named and were like family members. Of course they had their own house (stables) and we put them to bed at night. So today it seems some cars work themselves into our lives, like they become part of our lifestyle. We put them to bed in a stable (garage) and of course wish them good night…well, ok maybe not but nice to think there is a soul under that hood. I guess since engineers build software to help protect us and make this thing called ‘car’ work like they would like it to, that it also mirrors human thinking maybe – time to read I Robot again.

On a different note, Volvo is serious about audio. Here’s the deal for XC60s:

Finally, on April 3rd, Doug Speck, our CEO and President, will be on Twitter from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Come on over. Oh, ask him what he was thinking when I told him I’d do this blog.

Have a great week.

Dan
